Alan, Tom, Jon, and I hung out at a coffee shop tonight and drew like crazy. I’m hoping drawing around these talented dudes makes my art stronger. I only want to learn and get better and drawing with talented people definitely help.
I love the Silver Surfer but I can’t ever seem to draw the guy. I mean sure here he looks ok here but come on, he’s just standing there. I’m talking about drawing him looking awesome. I think there is a certain classic sleekness about him that I just can’t do and make him look cool at the same time. I’ll keep working on it though. I know it has something to do with the anatomy that I’ve become accustomed to, I gotta push my limits harder or I’m gonna go nuts. So anyway most of the page is just random faces, the second page is a monster eating a guy. Alan and Jon were drawing monsters so i didn’t wanna be left out. Until next time, see ya laters.

A few posts ago I linked to the other artists blogs, if you want to see what they did go check out their sites.

Man, this is such a great idea. I’m going to try and harass some people into having draw nights around here.

That monster is pretty gnarly. I think your surfer looks good to. You could always try drawing him as the Silver Savage from Planet Hulk to jazz him up if you wanted to. I think it would fit your style well. :)

Ryan Ottley you are the poop. I love these drawings, the surfer and bikini chick are some sweet looking drawrings. Poor dude getting his head ripped off..

Also heard you are coming to a con in toronto {where I live} in April! I was wondering if your going to bringing any original artwork with you to sell!

Keep posting your stuff is the bomb.

    RE: Silver Surfer –

Your stylized anatomy is rather angular. It sort of works against the sleek countour of the design of the character.

Try softening up your outer bodylines to a more rounded contour (butt, calves, your shoudler / tricep structure are specific areas that could use more roundedness). Then overlay your angular style as a complimentary structure, specifically on the torso and for the lighting / shading effects.

    Hope that makes some sense.

I like the less defined, angular take on the Surfer. It makes sense since he’s got a hard candy shell.

Just a quick thought… have you considered doing any H.P. Lovecraft stuff? That monster fits right in with some of the stuff he does. Just a thought…
