I started the draw night with figures, just playing with movement and structure a bit, and then good ol’ Tom Scholes shows up. Tom can draw anything if he wants to but he is mainly a background artist at the game company he works at and that’s all he draws at Draw night too. Which is way cool, I never think that kind of thing is too much fun when I’m drawing comics but he inspired me so I thought I’d do some backgrounds. You can see Tom’s background blog HERE. He does collabs also, an artist will draw a figure or something in one of his backgrounds, they are all on the blog, I have a few on there too. Fun stuff!

So here’s the sketches I did, I’d have to say the cowboy standing on the Cactus was the most fun. Let me know what you think, don’t be shy. If you’ve never posted a comment before don’t be afraid if it doesn’t show up after you post. All first time comments need approval to cut down on Spam. I get a lot of spam but I think one of my favorites is “your blog is very important, you are the new media”. That one always makes me laugh. I can’t imagine thinking to myself “Aw man, what a nice compliment, I’m totally approving this!” Someone needs to teach these Spam Ad makers how people really comment, they’d trick a lot more people into approving their comments, thus making products sold, because everyone who reads blog comments are looking for good deals on jewelry and porn. Right? Anyway enough ranting, here’s them sketches.

That Cowboy can jump!

Your blog is very important, you are the new media.

  2. Brandon says:

Those are some good environments — nice texture in them. The alien-like landscape with the Moai head and the…phallic…shapes is awesome.

  3. jt ford says:

This may be my favorite draw night so far, Ot.

  4. Tom Scholes says:

    Awww shucks howdy.
These environments are ace, you bastid!

I love the second page. The second drawing with the fishing is a great setting but the old dude with the mailbox staff has to be the best if only because it makes absolutely no sense.

First page reminds me of a Disney storyboard or style sheet.

  6. Rawls says:

haha…great sketches Ryan. I wonder how the cowboy got up there with out any damage?!? Thanks for the link as well… Thomas is an amazing artist. I also found out that he knows my good buddy Jason Kim. Small world.

  7. Rigger says:

Your blog is very impotent it is the shoe media.

For some unknown reason the cactus and the cowboy makes me think of Fear Agent. Maybe it’s the attitude.

  8. Ryan says:

The old man and the cowboy are the best. I wish I had your creativity, dawg. :D

  9. Brian Wisniewski says:

Anybody know where I can get some good deals on Porn?

Nice backgrounds, I like the canyon type rocks with the face statue, its got good composition. hehe reminds me of an area where a Dragon ball fight would take place.

  13. Xanclavious says:

That cactus has got to be the coolest cactus I have ever seen. Keep this stuff going.

  14. chrishaley says:

Those backgrounds are really great, man.

  15. Andy says:

Cool cactus, you should work it into Invincible somehow!

  16. George says:

Love the cactus. I’ve got a prickly pear cactus outside my office window that’s not even half as exciting…

  17. Dick Buff says:

Ryan, can you PLEASE give us a brief tutorial on how you make perspetive grids? I asked you this in person at Heroes Con but didn’t entirely understand the answer.

  18. Shannon says:

Ryan, just curious, what kind of pencil are you using? 2H, mechanical, etc?

  19. Moris says:

Is the bottom sketch on the 2nd page what the arch looks like now that it fell down?

    Sweet cacti.

Soon to come: The Cacti and The Half-Eaten Breakfast Burrito that got mixed up!

Dare you to draw that, unless it sounds painfully stoopid. :D

  20. j_ay says:

geezuz, man. You just continue to kick more and more arse.
    nicely done.

Jake Parker- I’m gonna have to agree! ;)

Brandon- Phallic shaped objects are never my intention, unless I am drawing an actual phallic thingie…which I don’t. heh.

jt ford- Well thanks man! I’ll definitely do more background stuff in the future, try to stretch my imagination a bit.

Tom Scholes- Thanks Tom! You is tha man.

Patrick Wedge- The old guy with the mail box staff can make sense if you make it make sense. Basically he wants to receive mail no matter where he goes.

Rawls- Yeah I think Jason Kim is the guy I met at draw night a couple weeks ago. Cool guy, you know him eh?

Rigger- hmmm, strange. Maybe Fear Agent is kind of a sci-fi western? I don’t know.

Ryan- Your wish is my command, it is now yours.

Brian Wisniewski- HA! Glad you started posting, Welcome!

    Mark- thank you sir!

Dipesh- Ah thanks! Glad you started posting.

Daniel- Well thank you Dan! Yeah I need to play around with backgrounds more often, it’s fun stuff.

Xanclavious- That cactus was surprisingly enjoyable to draw. I should draw them every week.

chrishaley- Well your comment was really great. So thanks!

    Andy- Hmmm, maybe I will.

George- put a mini Cowboy in your cactus, it’s guaranteed to be more exciting after that.

Dick Buff_ HAHA! Yeah, that’s sounds about right. I am horrible at explaining things. Maybe I can make a quick tutorial sometime.

    Shannon- I use a mechanical 2b pencil.

Moris- there is more than one arch sir.

    j_ay- Hey thank you!

    Ryan

And google image search only thinks there 3 arches tops, though I am aware there are several.
