the HAUNT
Hey! So I gotta tell you all about my new gig. I’m drawing Haunt for Image comics, I am STILL the artist for Invincible. I have an inker for BOTH titles so that way I can keep them both on time. Robert Kirkman is writing Haunt, Greg Capullo is doing layouts which speeds things up for me on pencils. And Todd McFarlane is doing digital inks, he’s also doing covers. Full info and interviews about it HERE!
Now you need to know that when I was a kid I had a huge crush on the stylistic lines of Todd McFarlane. I thought he was the BEST artist ever and I always wanted to draw comics because of the energy he brought to a page, and I wanted to bring that kind of energy to my art someday, seriously as soon as I saw Todd’s art it became a dream job to someday draw comics. So if my 16 year old self could see that I was working WITH Todd McFarlane NOW, my 16 year old bladder would probably release itself instantly. Just so you know what a McFarlane geek I was, here’s a photo of me at 16. Yes, my room was plastered with art that I copied from Todd’s and I signed my name to them passing them off as my own. heh.

When I got this new gig I did some Haunt sketches and mock covers just to try and get a hang of drawing this guy. I wanted to get a feel for how I would draw him, which is differently from how Todd does it. But I want to draw it in a way I’ll have fun doing it. And so far this stuff is tons of fun.

Thanks!
Ryan

Wow. Looks really great. Looking forward to it. Talk about a workhorse…
Wow – I’m suddenly interested in this project, knowing of your involvement. That’s a pretty cool story about McFarlane, but I’ve got to be honest with you – your stuff trumps his today.
By the way, are you selling either of those cool HAUNT images? Man, that first one is amazing!
Thanks for sticking with INVINCIBLE! Looking forward to HAUNT as well now.
Jay
awesome! i can’t wait. its going to be fun to see a book drawn by you but have a totally different feel to it. congrats!
That’s my son, always the handsome work horse. I love you my sweetie!!!
Sounds great
What’s the premise behind this one? Looks great, but I hope you don’t spread yourself to thin.
These look sweet! I’d love to see a comparison between your pencils and McFarlane’s inks when this comes out.
Uwaaaaaahaha 16 year old Ryan Ottley! Too cool.
Nice job Ryan. I’m very impressed by your work ethic my friend! Keep it up.
Why don’t you make out with him, Tom? This is awesome, and that pic of you isn’t as lame as you described yesterday, Ryan. I’m excited…show us more.
Excellent … nice job Ryan
Egads! Looks like Spider-Spawn but I don’t imagine that’s your doing. Great work in any case. I too was a McFarlane fan way back when. Thanks for a sneak peek.
Looking forward to it. Also maybe it will restore my love for McFarlane. Don’t get me wrong I love his toys but he broke my heart when he quit drawing books.
Good work Ryan. I think your stuff is miles better than Todd’s. Your art inspires me. Keep up the good work.
Yeah, you’re work at sixteen surpassed anything McFarlane has ever done in his entire career. That guy is the most overrated “artist” in comics. Kirkman seems like he’s spread real thin these days, I hope work on this doesn’t affect how good Invincible is getting. I wish I could buy a version of Haunt without the inks. I don’t mean to rant so much but McFarlane just tosses gobs of black all over your pencils, like a five year old, and subdues all the subtleties. I just had to say my piece and I understand working with one of your idols so I’ll shut up now. Thanks for the cools sketches though.
I was on the fence with this one based on the promo image I’ve seen. I trust me some Kirkman but…well, the design is farcical.
But you got me at least giving it a try.
No disrespect to Cliff but I dig you inking yourself on Invincible…
Good luck!
dude your mom totally killed your street cred.
So glad I got that second one at Comic-Con. I hope that first one is available in a similar print style soon.
