Here’s a pencil to ink process of page 19 from issue 45 of invincible. As you can see there was a little mishap with a red copic marker on that middle pic. I don’t work from home anymore, I have an office about 5 minutes from my house. But when I WAS at home working my son Quentin who is now 2 years old would occasionaly come in my office and say Hi or whatever. While I was inking this page I took a bathroom break and when I came out, GUH! He looked up at me smiling while drawing all over my page. I was pretty pissed but it was my fault for not closing my office door, so I really couldn’t be too mad. It took almost 2 hours to get it all cleaned up in Photoshop, I took the red out easily but there was a lot of ink smearing and really dark spots that had to be taken out manually. Anyway, the moral of the story is DON’T HAVE KIDS! heh. Not really. Just lock your office doors ok people? Thanks!

Oh man, what a little artist! nice clean-up, Ryan. ^__^

  2. Brad says:

I Have a 10 month old son and he is nothing more than a little wrecking ball. So I can totally understand. Looks like he has a nice technique.

  3. Ben says:

Man, we should have Quentin Ottley drawing this comic… he’s hundreds of times better than Ryan.

    Dang.

  4. chrishaley says:

I guess you have to be proud though that he’s wanting to follow in your footsteps, huh?

  5. Scribbles says:

awww, looks like your son has your talents eh? I smell awesomeness! ….or cheese. :P

  6. Don says:

Oh MAN!! Yeah, I have 3 boys and I totally know what you mean — love your kids and all, but for goodness sake lock up your work if you don’t want it destroyed by some curious kid who wants to join in the art fun!

Love the peek behind the curtains! I didn’t realize you pencilled this tightly (with shading and everything), considering you do your own inks. Thanks for sharing!

  7. jay says:

Thanks for the inside-look; stunning as always.
Quentin seems to have a bit of an Al Milgrom technique…

  8. Mafus says:

Oh, man. Yikes. I know that’s not supposed to be funny but I laughed until I almost peed my pants. Nice job fixing it. I would have given up and started over. That’s going to be a great story to tell the grandkids. You know. When they screw up one of Quentin’s drawings and he gets mad at them.

You moved out of home and into an office? Not to be nosey–but I will anyway–are you doing so well on Invincible that you’re able to open your own place? I was just curious to know what allows a comic artist to be able to move out of home to their own studio/office.

Hell, maybe it’s a freebee from an aunt. :/

The art is fabulous as always.

  10. Howard Shum says:

Sorry, Ryan — in that I laughed when I saw the red ink stuff. I don’t have kids, but I feel your pain. :)

I remember way back ago when I somehow accidentally spilled a bunch of india ink on an almost finished Aquaman page. This was before DC had stuff scanned so I had to fix it with white paint.

  11. Ryan says:

    Thanks JJ!

    Brad- technique, HA!

    Ben-duhhhhhhhhhhh. bad joke.

Chris Haley- Proud wasn’t my first thought.

Scribbles- You probably smell both, my kid LOVES the CHEESE!

Don- I don’t normally pencil this tight. With all the shading on Nolan’s face I wanted it to look good so I spent more time tightening things up.

    Jay- Who?

    Mafus- That is TRUE!

Kyle- I didn’t open up a place, I rent an office in a small office building close by. And yeah, Invincible does well for me.

Howard Shum- Sounds like a pain! I use to use ink like that when I inked but now it’s all brush pens for me. So no more spilling!

This rocked. I love it when artists show that mishaps like this can happen. Rarely do artists also go back and fix the mistakes so it was a nice change of pace to see what can happen, even to pros. Sorry you had to deal with that, but for what it is worth, this might be one of your favorite pieces ever.

  13. Chris Noeth says:

    Ha! Classic! :)

    Best,

    Chris

Haha, that’s sucks Ryan. I’ve had my nephews dephile some of my drawings too. I remember, when I was 12 my 1 year old nephew ruined a painting of mine so I painted his Barney green. I was 12 so that makes it okay. :) Of course his mom didn’t think so.
